How to Spot a Broken Torsion Spring Safely

A garage door that suddenly will not open can turn an ordinary morning into a real access and security problem. Knowing how to spot a broken torsion spring helps you avoid forcing the door, damaging the opener, or putting yourself in harm’s way. The good news is that most spring failures leave clear signs you can recognize from a safe distance.

Torsion springs carry most of the weight of your garage door. When one breaks, the door may still look normal while the entire lifting system is no longer working as it should. That is why a door that will not lift is not always an opener problem.

What a Torsion Spring Does

A torsion spring is a tightly wound metal coil mounted on a steel shaft above the garage door opening. As the door closes, cables and drums wind the spring to store energy. When the door opens, that stored energy helps lift its weight.

Most residential doors have one or two torsion springs. Two-spring systems are common on heavier or wider doors. If one spring breaks, the remaining spring may provide limited support, but the door is still unsafe to operate normally. A single-spring system will usually leave the opener trying to lift the full weight of the door by itself.

Torsion springs wear out through repeated cycles of opening and closing. Weather, rust, poor lubrication, an improperly balanced door, and heavy daily use can shorten their service life. Spring failure often happens without warning, even when the door worked perfectly the day before.

How to Spot a Broken Torsion Spring From a Safe Distance

The clearest visual sign is a visible gap in the spring coil. With the garage door fully closed, stand inside the garage and look above the door. A broken torsion spring often separates into two pieces, leaving a gap of about 1 to 3 inches in the coil. Do not touch the spring, shaft, cables, or brackets while checking.

A loud bang from the garage is another common sign. Homeowners often describe it as a gunshot, a firecracker, or something heavy falling. That sound is the stored tension releasing when the spring breaks. It can be alarming, but the noise itself does not necessarily mean the door panels or opener have been damaged.

You may also notice one or more of these symptoms:

  • The garage door opens only a few inches, then stops or reverses.

  • The door feels extremely heavy when you attempt to lift it manually after disconnecting the opener.

  • The top section of the door strains, bends, or jerks as the opener tries to raise it.

  • The door opens unevenly or hangs crooked, especially if one spring in a two-spring setup has failed.

A functioning garage door should feel relatively balanced. A door that suddenly feels like dead weight is a strong indicator that the spring system has failed.

Do Not Confuse a Broken Spring With an Opener Problem

A garage door opener can fail, but an opener issue and a spring issue do not behave the same way. If you hear the opener running while the door remains on the floor, many homeowners assume the motor is bad. In reality, the opener may be responding normally but lacks the spring assistance required to lift the door.

A broken spring can also cause the opener to stop mid-cycle. Modern openers are designed to sense excessive resistance. If your door moves a few inches and reverses, the opener may be protecting itself from trying to lift a door that is far too heavy.

That said, not every hard-to-open door has a broken torsion spring. Why You Should Not Try to Replace It Yourself

Torsion springs are under extreme tension. Even after a spring breaks, the system can still contain stored energy, and the cables, drums, shaft, and second spring may be under load. Attempting to loosen set screws, remove cables, or install a replacement spring without the correct tools and training can cause serious injury or property damage.

The risk is not limited to the spring itself. A garage door may weigh 150 to 400 pounds or more, depending on its size, construction, insulation, and windows. If you release the wrong component, the door can fall unexpectedly.

Avoid using the opener repeatedly to force the door upward. This can strip internal gears, overheat the motor, damage the top panel, or pull the door out of alignment. When One Spring Breaks, Should Both Be Replaced?

It depends on the setup and the age of the springs. If your door uses two matching torsion springs and one breaks after years of use, replacing both is often the practical choice. They have completed roughly the same number of cycles, so the unbroken spring may be close to failing as well.

If the other spring is newer, was previously replaced, or is in a different configuration, a technician may recommend replacing only the failed part. The right answer is based on the actual condition of the system, not a one-size-fits-all rule.

Higher-cycle springs can also be worth considering for households that use the garage as the main entrance. They typically cost more up front, but they can last longer where the door opens and closes several times each day.
